Why was the Senate unable to get enough Republican votes to honor 'To Kill A Moc

Thank author of this post/commentWASHINGTON—Unable to find a single Republican senator willing to break ranks and support the measure, Senate Democrats failed Thursday to stop the filibuster of S. 6253, a one-page resolution recognizing the 50th anniversary of Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird. "We almost had Scott Brown (R-MA) on board, but he balked when members of his party insisted the book only be commended if its court-room scenes were shortened a bit and the setting changed to Nebraska, " said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), explaining the procedural difficulties in passing legislation to honor the classic tale of a small-town lawyer's tireless efforts to defend an innocent man. "If we'd agreed to all their compromises, we'd have wound up with a watered-down version of the novel containing only seven of its original 31 chapters." At press time, Republicans said they would be willing to resume negotiations if the beloved work of American literature is revised so that Tom Robinson is a small-businessman wrongly accused of failing to provide employees with health benefits and Scout is a boy.

I have never understood the idea of a filibuster. Blocking basically anything that tries to pass the Senate with something silly like talking forever doesn't seem to me to be the logical thing to do. Really, this action undermines the whole democratic process entirely allowing one person to stall the efforts of many. Granted this issue is small compared to something like healthcare reform but the idea of a filibuster even existing is unsettling.

It is sometimes hard to get involved in politics most especially if you are doubtful whether you have the capacity to do the task of being a leader of the country.

The republican country of Nebraska is quite unknown to me. So I am in need to search some information or updates about it. I got a book for it, but I want some online reference. Can anyone suggest a good site about Republican Party in Nebraska?

I personally isn't really aware of how politics work in Nebraska. Although I am aware how dirty politics can be. Back from the country where I came from, politics is really dirty and sometimes can lead to losing one's life. I think the best thing that we need to do regardless of what political party where we belong is for us to unite and do our best for the betterment of our country. Thank you.

It is sad to know that politics seems to be synonymous with theft, corruption and fraud. How I wish that this kind of image connected to the people in the government would be rep;aced with positive descriptions. But nowadays it seems that it is so hard to achieve. But I believe that there would come a time that the system would change. Thanks for sharing in here and have a great day to all.

Politics should be the one protecting the people and solve issues concerning its country, but it seems nowadays that people can't necessarily rely on them. Seldom can you hear a government without corruption. We can't deny the fact that some politicians run for the position for their own self interest.

Honestly, I still need further information about the government issues in Nebraska. But I hope that concern citizens would make certain actions for the welfare of their country.
